Samson touts the Meteor Mic as being the “universal solution” for music recording on your computer as well as being the perfect microphone for iChat, podcasts, Skype and other voice recognition software. All it will take is one glance and you will undoubtedly fall in love with the sleek design as it resembles something you would see in the latest SyFy movie. Does it really measure up to its competition functionally or quality wise specifically the Yeti? Read this Samson Meteor Mic Review to find out.
Overview of Features
The Samson Meteor Mic comes equip with a 25mm diaphragm condenser designed for a rich audio recording. It also has a cardioid pickup pattern and frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz which is smooth and flat. You are getting a 16 bit, 44.1/48 kHz resolution that is CD quality. The legs all fold back allowing for optimal positioning of the mic. The design is sleek and chrome plated making it very durable. You can plug the Meteor mic directly into the computer with the USB input, there aren’t any additional drivers needed.
The Samson Meteor Mic is compatible with the majority of computer based digital audio workstations. The headphone jack is 1/8 inch stereo jack for no latency monitoring and is equip with a mute switch. This all comes in a carry pouch with a USB cable.
Appearance
Let’s start by saying that in the increasingly large and competitive USB microphone market what sets this device apart from its competitors is the design. The Meteor Mic from Samson stands on three rounded, hinged legs that can be folded up to fit into the contours of the mic, making it smaller than a computer mouse. The legs which are padded are adjustable making the 1 inch cardioid capsule face a variety of directions, though the range is rather limited.
The microphone is made of high quality metal and has a rather heavy duty screen protecting the internal parts of the mic. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that this mic doesn’t have anything plastic on it. Everything about the meteor mic says that it is high quality piece of equipment.
One the front of the microphone you will find the volume dial that has mute button in the center and the power indicator light is located directly above the company logo. On the back of the Samson Meteor mic you will find the USB mini plug as well as the 3.5mm headphone jack which allows you to listen to audio tracks without it bleeding into the mic. This is a top notch feature if you are going to be doing a podcast with a partner or creating music.
Sound Quality
I have to admit that I was rather excited to hear that this awesome looking little USB mic would be able to deliver rich recordings regardless of what I was recording. Upon using the microphone though, I found that as long as I was within 4 to 8 inches of the grill of the mic there was excellent frequency response accompanied by the nice p-pop blocking effect that is built in to the mic. The 1/8 inch headphone monitor, volume control and mute button all worked very well.
You can use the Meteor mic with your laptop as well. So if you are getting ready to do a podcast and don’t want to sit in your office, you want the freedom to be mobile and use your laptop the do to the podcasts, and again as stated earlier the mini USB port and the 3.5 headphone jack on the back make it the perfect mic to use if you are working with a partner on your podcasts.
Power
Probably one of the nicest features about this Samson meteor mic is that unlike many other USB microphones it doesn’t suck the power out of the host device, meaning that you can even use this mic with your iPad.
Ease of Use
With this being a USB mic you can basically plug it in to your computer and start using it. You may want to take a moment to browse through the very well written user manual that accompanies the Meteor Mic. It offers a variety of tips on how to record voices, piano, acoustic guitar, guitar amp and even an overhead drum kit.
There have been a number of different reviews on using this mic for podcasts, for me it was easy to use and offered excellent sound quality. This is probably where taking the time to read the user’s manual helped. I placed the mic about 12 inches away from my mouth and started recording. You will probably notice that the Samson Meteor mic is designed to compete with the Yeti. As far as podcasting goes I found the Samson mic to offer better resolution than the Yeti. The voice quality was crisp and clear and it was able to capture the nuances that make your voice distinctive to you.
Conclusion
Overall I found the Samson Meteor mic to be a better microphone amongst the USB mic competitors. Samson is a company with an established history of creating superior wireless microphones created for live performances, and they have been creating USB mics for six years. In other words they know what they are doing and the Meteor mic is no exception.
When you sit down to compare the Samson Meteor mic to the Yeti you will be pleasantly surprised to find that it offers superior sound quality. It is small and considerably more unobtrusive than other USB mics. Samson markets the Meteor mic for about $150, but you can find it on many online retailers for about $99 making it a better value for the money.
